My inspiration for many of my paper cuts comes from folklore and fairy tales and childhood memories of escaping into a story book. I’m also inspired by architecture and the relationship between the new and the old, city and countryside. Zhen Xian Bao are replicas of Chinese minority folk art books, made in the villages in south west China for keeping threads, needles and patterns for costumes and personal items. I have been swept away by the ingenuity of these secret pocket books, and love the fact that there are places to hide inside all your little treasures. The art of making these books is being lost and I’m determined to do my bit to ensure art is kept alive. I like to alter old books that no longer have a home or are of use and change their identity into something ethereal and magical.
